Mike Jacker’s Taken By the Wind tells the true story of an adventure that is no longer possible in this day of instantaneous communications, GPS and the internet. The vividly detailed first person account brings the reader right into the cockpit of the author’s 30-foot sailboat, alone in the middle of the ocean. I could feel the spray on my face and the motion of the boat pitching in the waves. Moments of tension as the three young sailors fought squalls and coped with equipment failures kept me on the edge of my seat. I also lived with them the boredom of the doldrums. The author paints colorful pictures of life on isolated Pacific islands before they were developed by tourism and global commerce. The rhythm of local music, whether the Latin-Caribbean beat on Isla Mujeres or in Belize, or the rapid drumbeat of Polynesian dance animate the book throughout. This is a book that will delight adventure-lovers (armchair or otherwise), sailors and all those interested in exotic travel. It is also a charming coming of age story. This is a superb book and I highly recommend it to sailors, and landlubbers alike. The author is looking back as a recently retired doc...to a grand adventure with his childhood buddy...they more than pulled off! These guys sailed "old school" with a used stock boat not as sturdy as really necessary, and with an engine that hardly worked, years before GPS, with shoddy charts, a decade before cruising guides started showing up. Mike tells a captivating tale here...with plenty of rich detail, but also a sense of the bewilderment and discovery of a young man off on a grand adventure...a thing most folks just don't get around to doing...I highly recommend this well written very personal story...
